Recipient of the MWVA 2017 Merit Award : Montez Miller (Television Producer)
Montez C. Miller
Producer/Director Montez Miller stands in her Detroit Pride with her no matter where
her gifts and talents take her, and they have taken her many amazing places. The
award-winning media expert has worked at a national record label, where she
worked on major projects for the entire roster and she’s been the lead producer and
creative force for one of the biggest shows in BET history. With more than 30 years
of network and major market television experience in her history, Montez Miller has
proven herself to be one of the best in the industry, producing programming in every
field from entertainment to sports, politics to family interest.
Miller began her career at Specs Howard School of Broadcast Arts in Southfield,
Michigan, where she received her certification in radio and broadcast television. She
moved quickly to a local FOX affiliate and then moved into radio, working at Detroit’s
WJLB-FM98. That brilliant move also moved her into the field of entertainment. Her
first stint in TV was with Barden Cable and her reputation as a hard-worker and a go-
getter caught the attention of Black Entertainment Television (BET).
Miller joined the BET team on the staff of the network’s #1 program—VIDEO SOUL
(hosted by Detroit’s own Donnie Simpson)—and quickly and passionately worked on
the show to grow its already huge audiences and to freshen its appeal among
audiences and A-list celebrities from the worlds of music, sports, television, film and
other genres. Miller was a hit, changing the format and increasing the ratings for the
long-running show and keeping it strong until it left the air in 1995. Montez Miller
was called upon to do many major television projects during her 5 year BET tenure,
including BET’S WALK OF FAME celebrating the incomparable Diana Ross, A Video
Soul Special with The Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin, an award-winning special with
R&B super-group Dru Hill and other programming, including a special with the
legendary Janet Jackson and working with long-time fan favorite Sherry Carter on
VIDEO LP.
Her talents became so well known throughout the music industry that
PolyGram/Island Records was able to acquire her talents away from BET and bring
her into the recording/music side of the entertainment industry. Trusting her faith,
Montez moved to NYC as Island Black Music’s Director of National Video Promotion,
serving in that career-changing role for almost 5 years. While at the label, Miller
supervised and managed the promotion of her label’s roster not only to BET but also
to MTV, VH-1, MTV-2 and more than 200 local/regional music video outlets,
expanding the audiences for such artists as the hip-hop pioneers Salt-N-Pepa, the
world renown U2, gospel superstar Karen Clark-Sheard, the iconic Isley Brothers and
America’s Pastor Bishop TD Jakes.
After an illustrious career that had taken her place she could only have dreamed,
Miller felt called home to Detroit, but she brought her talents and passion with her.
She joined GlobalHue (former Don Coleman Advertising) as their Executive Talent
Director. Miller aggressively built and strategically maintained entertainment
relationships while identifying urban/multicultural mass-market trends for various
agency clients, including Daimler Chrysler, Verizon, Miller Brewing Company,
American Airlines, Johnson and Johnson, and The U. S. Navy, among others.
Miller remained with GlobalHue until she felt compelled to finally live the dream that
brought her home to the place where she knew she’d be empowered to grow and
create. She formed THE MONTEZ GROUP, her own video production and
development company.
Through THE MONTEZ GROUP, industry veteran Montez Miller oversees program
development and the execution of all creative shoots, lending her formidable talents
as performing as Executive Producer, Producer, Booking Agent and Event Planner.
Miller served as the Executive Producer for the award-winning reality series “A Dose
of Reality”—a compelling look inside Detroit’s Wayne County Jail. The series gained
national acclaim and was spotlighted by actor and filmmaking pioneer (and now CEO
and President of the Black Family Channel) Robert Townsend. She also served as the
Executive Producer for the 2005 Bermuda Music Festival (Bermuda Islands), where
she booked the superstar legend Teena Marie and the supergroup and 2012 BET
Lifetime Achievement Award recipients Maze featuring Frankie Beverly.
Through her local/regional association with Detroit’s Comcast Cable, Miller has
created and produced numerous programs, including “City Highlights” with host
Kathy Young Welch, “Getting to Know Your City Council Candidate”, “Electing Your
School Board Candidate”, and a slew of other creative endeavors. She is currently
serving as the corporate producer for Real Times Media, the parent company of the Michigan Chronicle.
Though personally modest about her accomplishments, Miller has been lauded and
recognized in many media outlets for her landmark work as a producer. Her peers in
print, television and radio have featured her in: Detroit Free Press, Detroit News,
Michigan Chronicle and Michigan Citizen and also on local media outlets; FOX2, WDIV
and WXYZ. She has also had many awards and accolades bestowed upon her: 1991
Detroit City Council Testimonial Resolution, 1999 Best International Program for “24
Hours with Dru Hill,” where her field production won the GOLD WORLD MEDAL, three
2005 Telly Awards for “A Dose Of Reality”, 2006 Proclamation from the Office of the
Mayor of the City of Detroit for “A Dose of Reality”, 2006 Detroit City Council
Testimonial Resolution, 2006 Beacon Award Finalist for Comcast Care Day, 2007
Beacon Award Finalist for A Dose Of Reality and five 2007 Telly Awards Bronze
Winner for United Way Campaign.
Montez Miller is passionate about production and storytelling, using her amazing gifts
and perspectives to shine a light on causes and careers, superstars and super
moments alike. She’s taken her gifts from Detroit to DC to NYC and back again, but
she’s always living for her hometown in her heart. She helms and heads THE
MONTEZ GROUP,REAL TIMES MEDIA/MICHIGAN CHRONICLE
standing strong in the fact that there’s never been a challenge
that’s proven to be too big for her and what she brings to the table is a passion to
get the job done and ensure that it both looks amazing and conveys a powerful
message. Montez Miller is proud of what she does and as a daughter of Detroit,
she’s equally proud of where she does it. No matter where her programming arrives
on the air, she smiles with her heart knowing that it was made in Detroit!
